SUMS Maths on a PDA
- Getting started.

NOTE. The PDA needs to have Windows Mobile, or
another operationg system that supports Flash.
Most older Palm handhelds do not support Flash.

1. We generally provide our software on a CD. We can additionally supply it on SD card.

Our software is easy to install from our CD to a PDA. It is simply a matter of copying the top level folder from the CD (usually the folder is called SUMSMaths) onto the PDA using an SD card reader or equivalent.

Note that all of the SUMS Online software has been designed to have a small file size - less than 20MB in total - so storage on the PDA should not be a problem.

2. Next, use File Explorer on the PDA to locate the folder.

To find FILE EXPLORER, use the START menu to go to Programs.

3. In the screen opposite, you can see the SUMSOnline folder (now probably called SUMS_Maths).

Notice that the PDA has already been switched to LANDSCAPE as SUMS is correctly proportioned for that mode. To do this go to the Settings page, select System then Screen.

4. Use File Explorer to open the folder. Inside there is a top level file, usually called 'start.htm'. This is used to start the SUMS Maths software.

5. You should now have full access to the games and activities. The game shown opposite is an example. All of our games and activities are developed in Adobe (Macromedia) Flash - all trademarks acknowledged.

TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE 1. If you click on a picture and no activity appears then you almost certainly do not have Flash on your PDA. This is easily fixed - see below.

TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE 2. If you have switched your browser away from Internet Explorer you also need to check that the new browser (e.g. Opera) is in a version that supports Flash.

MACROMEDIA (now ADOBE) FLASH MISSING FROM YOUR PDA.

Our software needs Flash installed on your PDA. This is sometimes put on by the supplier, but if not then go to the following website address.

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer_pocketpc/downloads/player.html

About 6 lines down the page there is a download of Flash Player 7 (fpc_ppc_en.cab). Download it and save it on your laptop/PC, then transfer it to your PDA and click on it to run it. This only needs to be done once, takes only a few seconds, and from that point onwards Flash should work on your PDA.
